Bedlington terrier: characteristics and character

If there is a dog that, as it passes by, draws all eyes to itself, it is the Bedlington terrier. Everything that surrounds this dog breed is glamor and delicacy, but, under the guise of this fur, there is a real terrier.

This adorable dog has its origins in the lands of northern England, very close to the Scottish border, where miners used it to hunt the rats that infested the mines where they worked. Shortly after, given the good physical qualities of the Bedlington terriers, they began to be used in hunting rabbits, foxes and hares.

Characteristics of the Bedlington terrier

Thanks to its size, it is fully part of the category of medium-sized dogs. Its height, in males, is between 39 and 43 centimeters, and in females between 38 and 42 centimeters. Thanks to these measures, it is a dog that can be kept in an apartment very easily. Its irrepressible vitality will lead you to spend a lot of time outdoors in the company of this animal.

His weight is generally between 8 and 11 kilograms, which is not much for his height. Its slim waist reveals its past crossbreed with the greyhound, giving it an agility and top speed that you would never imagine seeing it for the first time.

Physically he is a real athlete, but his fur makes him look much more delicate than he really is, especially if you behave like most Bedlington terrier owners, which is to take him to the hairdresser very often.

Its coat is long and, in general, curled, of a bluish white, gray or sand color. Its fur is the most characteristic aspect of its breed, since it is longer at the ends and on the top of the head, compared to the trunk, making it possible, thanks to a touch of the hairdresser, to achieve this look so showy and original. .

Regarding his distinctive silhouette, he is the only member of the terrier family who has an arched back, which makes him very different from his siblings. Only its elongated snout and the fur on the lower part of its paws denounce its belonging to the terrier family.

One of the most controversial aspects of this breed consists in the use of cutting the hair of the ears of its specimens to zero, leaving the famous pom-pom-shaped “earrings” exposed. Tastes, of course, are not debatable, but it is a very common practice among people who want their Bedlington terrier to look as cute as possible.

This animal is also known as the “lamb dog”, due to its undeniable resemblance to a small lamb. Her downy-looking coat and hairdresser’s interventions can make the imagination play a trick on us at first glance.

Character of the Bedlington terrier

If we rely on his flirtatious image, we might think we are facing a quiet and delicate dog, who prefers a beauty salon over a run in the countryside. But you must not be fooled: under this nightgown there is a real terrier, with all the characteristics that distinguish it.

The positive characteristics attributed to this breed are more than justified, but it is equally true that these animals need to devote more time to exercise, than other dogs of their size. It is a dog of considerable physical resistance and endowed with greater strength than it may seem; anyone who has had the opportunity to own a terrier knows what we are talking about.

He is a perfect animal to take with you for exercise: surely, you will end up getting tired before him. But fear not, because at home she can behave well and can also dedicate herself to long hours of sleep.

His character is restless and active, but very adaptable to almost any size of home. She loves children and will help you sleep better at night. Furthermore, his protective instinct prompts him to watch over their safety.

Before making the decision to adopt a Bedlington terrier, you need to keep in mind what their needs are, especially in relation to physical exercise. If you decide to adopt one, you will find that it is a breed that will bring you only joy and happy moments.
