If you pay attention to the language of the cat’s tail,  you will be able to understand how they feel and act accordingly.

Felines are very expressive animals not only with the body, but also with the sounds. Let’s find out more about the language of the cat’s tail.

What does the language of the cat’s tail express?

Cats’ tails can be of various shapes and sizes – long like that of the Siamese or soft like that of the Angora cat – and they use it to express their mood and emotions.

It is very important to understand what your pet wants to tell you when he moves it in a specific way:

1. Vertically raised tail

When he is walking around the house, garden, etc, and his tail is upright but relaxed and pointing up, it  means he feels safe and happy. He may also have a bent tip, which is another sign that he is fine.

2. Curved tail as if it were a question mark

The mid-tail forms a curve, and if you notice it looks like a question mark. Do you know what that means? He is inviting you to play with him, so put aside what you are doing and do it. This position  indicates a naughty attitude. He is looking for fun!

3. High and vibrant tail

Cat tail language can be difficult to interpret in some cases. For example,  if the cat lifts its tail and it vibrates, it can be for two reasons: the first is that it is happy to see you and it is relaxed.

4. Side lashes

Suppose you are playing with him or cuddling him and suddenly you see him swinging his tail from side to side, tapping his tip. This indicates that he no longer wants to play, that he is getting annoyed or that you are touching some “forbidden” part of his body, which are more than you can imagine!

It is likely that if you continue, the cat will opt to wrap around your hand or arm with its front and back legs and bite you,  first gently and then harder. Therefore, if you see him doing this movement with his tail, we recommend that you move away.

5. Tail resting on the floor

When the animal is in an alert position, with its tail resting on the ground and tapping its tip from time to time, it means that it is irritated, indecisive and thoughtful. In the event that the movement is very abrupt, it means that he is angry and could attack or flee.

6. Low tail

Be careful if your cat has a stiff, downturned tail,  as this is a clear sign of aggression. He is in a bad mood and you better not disturb him.

7. Curled tail

You may have seen your furry friend sitting with his tail attached to his body while he is sleeping or sunbathing. It means he is very happy and relaxed!

8. Tail between legs

It is a position of submission or fear. The hidden tail can indicate that there is something that is making him nervous.

9. Tail swinging

When cats’ tails move slowly sideways, it  means that they are very focused on an object or something that attracts their attention; a game, a bird, or even an insect that entered the window.

Finally, if your cat wraps its tail around another animal, for example a dog, it is a way to show affection, as if it were hugging it. It means they are friends!
