What’s It Like Living With An Agapornis Bird?

What's it like living with an Agapornis bird?

Agapornis are in fashion as pets. More and more people own one. This is perhaps due to the fact that they are easy to manage, or because of their adorable character. Would you like to know what it’s like to live with an Agapornis bird?

Maybe you’ve never heard of it, or you’ve never seen one. Here is some information on these.

Characteristics of Agapornis

They are birds very similar to small parrots. They are colloquially called “inseparable”, from the union of the two Greek words “ágape” (love or affection) and “ornis” (bird).

This is because the male and female spend a lot of time together and, on numerous occasions, arrange each other’s feathers.

Their dimensions range between 13 and 16 cm. They feed on fruit, seeds and yolks, and live between 10 and 15 years.

What’s it like living with an Agapornis?

An Agapornis is very different from other companion animals. It doesn’t need a lot of care,  but its character can sometimes remind us of a dog’s.

He’ll come if you call him, snuggle up to your side and love to play. It may peck your head affectionately, bite your skin, and sniff your neck.

Coexistence with an Agapornis is different from that with a common pet, but no less pleasant for this. If he is happy in the house with you, even if you leave the windows open, he will not escape when he comes out of the cage.

This shows his loyalty and love for his family.

It is still a little known bird, but suitable as a pet. It is ideal for children and has qualities that will make all family members smile.

How to take care of it

It is possible that you have already had a cat or a dog. Knowing how to take care of it can be easy thanks to experience, or to the information on the internet on the subject.

Despite this, owning an Agapornis is different, and as it’s only now spreading as a pet, there isn’t much information on its needs.

Here are some tips:

  • Let it fly. These little birds need exercise. For this, you have to make them fly free around the house. If you are afraid that they will escape because they do not yet know you very well, close all doors and windows before you leave them. However, you must allow it to fly every day.
  • Diet. Agapornis need vitamins, minerals and low fat. Fruits and vegetables are allowed in their diet, but don’t forget that they need specific bird food, which you can find in pet stores.
  • Sunshine.  This is an essential requirement for all birds. They need direct sunlight, without filters. So, place them in front of a window or outside for several hours a day.
  • Give him a companion. Although they may live alone, they may be saddened. Agapornis are born to live in pairs, so if you want your bird to be happy, get him a mate. If he dies, find a replacement.
  • Take him to the vet. Birds know how to hide their ills, which is why constant visits to the vet are essential to be able to quickly diagnose a health problem.

Despite being a different and particular animal,  coexistence with an Agapornis will be very pleasant. Knowing how to take care of it will make everything easier. Adopt one!
